January means Pinewood Derby, which for many boys is the highlight of the scout year. It will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Loring Elementary School. We still need parent volunteers to make the event go; please take a look at the “Volunteer Responsibilities” information on the right of this page and let us know how you can help. There is also some good Pinewood information on our website, and I encoujrage you and your boys to read through it.

Registration: There are a lot of scouts this year and we are on a tight schedule, please make sure your scout makes it to registration on time. The race software does not permit new registrants once the racing has begun.

Registration Times: (races will follow immediately after registration)

Webelos II 7:30 – 7:55

Webelos I 7:55 – 8:15

Bears 8:35 – 8:55

Wolves 9:10 – 9:30

Tigers 9:45 – 10:05

Pack Finals 10:25 – 10:45

Be sure to follow the Sudbury, Pack 60, Car Construction Rules which can be found on our website (again, look at the navigation bar on the right side of the page). We don’t want to disappoint any scout by disqualifying him. We will have tools on hand to make minor adjustments at registration time.

If any Cub Scout does not have access to proper tools or an adult partner, ask your Cub leaders for help. We don’t want any Cub Scout to feel left out just because he didn’t have the necessary tools or help. Also, if some total disaster befalls you while making your car, we can get you another one. We want every scout to race on derby day. Please do not hesitate to contact your den leader or the Pinewood Derby Chairman with any questions or problems.

A reminder, please no liquid lubrication. Aside from being against the rules, it makes a mess of the track.

This year the Pack Committee and I are proud to announce that Pack 60 Sudbury will be partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Assabet Valley (Sudbury-Stow- Maynard-Concord-Acton). The Assabet Valley Club, based in Maynard, has 400 members serving nearly 700 children per year, 57% from low to moderate income circumstances.

The Committee and I thought that partnering with the Club would help raise awareness of this great organization as well as give our boys additional opportunities for community service events which will make a difference. Please note there are many Cub Scout advancements, badges and awards that require community service projects.

For our first partnership activity, Pack 60 Parents and Scouts are being asked to volunteer to work the Annual 5K Road Race in Maynard with the proceeds benefiting the Club on Saturday, September 15th. Pack 60 is a sponsor this year for the race. The Club is in need of:
8-10 Cub Scouts (Bear and Webelos only) for the main road race from 9am-12pm. Half the time will be spent on Arts and Crafts, half the time working the main race route. Another 8-10 Cub Scouts (Tiger-Webelos) are needed from 10:30am-12pm to work the Kids one mile road race. Cub Scouts are asked to wear their scout uniform. We would need 1 parent minimum for every 2-3 Cub Scouts.

I would ask you e-mail or call Dan Maier, Dbmaier@comcast.net, 978-261-5445, and your respective den leader and let him/her know if you can volunteer by Thursday, September 6th.
